Septic Tank Services

There are several reasons for septic tank services

  • Septic Tank Installation
  • Verifying if home has septic or sewer system
  • Locating the septic tank system
  • Regular maintenance
  • Emergency repairs
  • Inspections

It’s important to understand the basics of your septic tank system. The following is a simplistic explanation of how a healthy system operates effectively and potential problems.

What is a Septic Tank?

A septic tank is part of a larger system designed to remove and dispose of waste from your home. It is a large self-contained tank that provides the initial treatment of waste.

Waste is basically anything that is flushed down a toilet, poured down a sink (kitchen and bathroom), or removed by a drain, (shower, bath, washing machine, dishwasher and garbage disposal waste). The first process and stop for the waste is the septic tank.

How does a Septic Tank work?

The septic tank is where the hard work is done by your septic system. All the waste from your home, including liquids and solids, travels through your waste drain lines to the septic tank.

An “inlet baffle” is a device that directs the flow of the waste into the septic tank from your house. It helps in the separation of solid and liquids and can also prevent the backflow of waste to your house.

The waste is naturally separated inside the tank according to the weight of the waste.

  • “Scum” is the top layer consisting of light weight waste such as toilet paper, soap and detergents, grease and oils, and other light weighted waste. It weighs less than water. Scum floats!
  • “Sludge” is the bottom layer consisting of heavier matter such as dirt, sand and soil; food that was not consumed or digested; raw vegetables, coffee grounds and bones from a garbage disposal; and other weighted waste. Sludge sinks!
  • “Effluent” is what is left after the scum floats and the sludge sinks. It is the liquid in the middle between the scum and sludge. The effluent is the part of waste that is ready to leave the septic tank via an “outlet baffle” headed to the leach/drain field. The outlet baffle prevents the top layer of scum from exiting directly to the leach/drain field. Scum entering the field lines can clog and break down the septic system.

The tank works by the settling of solids to the bottom and through a process where microorganisms digest the biodegradable waste. After the breakdown of the waste, the liquid leaves the tank through a pipe and enters perforated pipes. The liquid is broken down more in the field and

Septic Drain Fields also called Leach Field/Drains

The perforated pipes make up the drain field. The pipes are laid out in trenches underground. They are surrounded by a gravel layer. The liquid, after further breakdown, trickles out through the perforated pipes, through the gravel, and into the soil. Tiny soil creatures and plants, along with microscopic organisms, clean the liquid. The clean substance eventually makes it way to the underground water system. This is a delicate process and if it is disturbed, there could be costly consequences.

Septic Tank Installation

We install septic tank systems for new construction and when a total replacement of an existing system is required.

We work closely with your contractor to coordinate septic installation. It is so important to get it right the first time. A properly installed septic system, with regular maintenance can last for a very long time. A shotty installation that skimps on the parts and labor to save money (for the installer – not you), will cost you more in the long run. Save now, spend later. The cheapest quote is not always the best deal. Educate yourself, so you can ask the right questions about the install.

If someone told you that you have a total system failure and you need a septic system replacement. GET A SECOND OPINION from us. Some companies are out to make the most money from a customer. You may need a replacement, but it might just need a repair – not a replacement. You can trust us to inspect your system and make an honest recommendation

Septic or Sewer?

Some homeowners/renters don’t know if they are on a septic or sewer system. If you are connected to a sewer system, there is usually a charge on your water bill. The homebuilder/contractor, if known, could also supply this information. The house may have originally had a septic but since has been connected to a sewer system. The local Health Department may have information. Sometimes the only way to verify the system, is to hire professionals to locate the septic tank or the sewer hookup.

Locating and Digging

If you are planning on land improvements, it is imperative that you know the location of you pipes, septic tank and field lines. Building or landscaping over your system could cause damage or destruction of the septic system. It is important to know where your septic system is located on your property just as it is vital to know where any lines and cables are buried in your yard. If digging or excavating is necessary, we will leave your yard in good shape.

Septic Tank Maintenance

Septic tank maintenance (pumping out tank) should be performed every 3-5 years depending on tank size, number of people in the household and other determinants. If heavy usage with lots of solids and things such as garbage disposal use and soft water, your septic tank may need to be pumped annually. Our trained professionals will inspect the tank after the pump out for any worn out or broken parts, cracks and other potential problems. A visual inspection of the drain field will be performed.

The Significance of Septic Tank Services

Septic tank systems, though largely invisible to daily life, play an integral role in the health and hygiene of many households. Neglecting the maintenance of these systems can lead to environmental degradation, health risks, and costly repairs. By actively investing in septic tank services, homeowners not only prolong the life of their systems but also promote a healthier living environment.

Environmental Benefits of a Well-Maintained Septic System

A properly functioning septic system is a marvel of nature and human engineering combined. When waste is processed efficiently, it reduces the possibility of contaminants leaching into the soil and the groundwater. This not only preserves the surrounding environment but also ensures that local water sources remain unpolluted, benefiting entire communities.

Innovations in Septic Tank Technology

The world of septic systems isn’t static. With advancements in technology, newer and more efficient septic tanks and components are continually being developed. Some modern systems come with sensors that alert homeowners when it's time for a pump-out, while others have been designed to reduce nitrogen levels in the effluent, further protecting the environment. As a forward-thinking service provider, Crimson Construction always stays abreast of the latest developments, ensuring our customers have access to the best solutions available.

The Economic Advantages of Timely Septic Services

On the surface, regular maintenance might seem like an added expense, but in reality, it's a saving. The costs associated with repairing or replacing a failed septic system can be significant. By scheduling regular inspections and timely pump-outs, homeowners can avoid the unexpected financial burdens of system overhauls. Moreover, a well-maintained septic system can enhance property value, proving beneficial if one decides to sell their home.

Understanding the Septic Microbiome

The effective breakdown of waste in a septic tank is a biological process. Within the confines of the tank, a complex community of bacteria and microorganisms work diligently to decompose the waste. These beneficial microbes play an essential role in converting the waste into a form that's less harmful to the environment. Thus, it's crucial to ensure that household products like harsh chemicals and cleaners, which can disturb this microbiome, are used judiciously.

Professional Expertise Matters

While many homeowners might be tempted to address minor septic issues themselves, the complexity of these systems means that professional expertise is often required. A misstep in handling could lead to more significant issues down the line. Crimson Construction prides itself on its team of seasoned professionals who bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to every job, ensuring that our clients receive the best care possible.

Repair or Emergency Calls

Regular maintenance may prevent some problems, but accidental damage can occur, and parts can be broken, missing or worn out. Tree roots searching for water can cause damage to pipes and field lines. Toys and other items can be flushed down the toilet and can overwhelm the septic tank. Problems can be minor with an inexpensive and quick repair or can be more extensive and costlier. Either way you want an honest and reputable company that you can trust for your repairs, someone who will not invent problems, try to finance their next car by you, or basically rip you off.

Inspections

Don’t close on a real estate deal that has a septic system without a thorough inspection and pump out. If there are problems, you want to know, and have the problems corrected prior to the purchase. Our professionals will thoroughly inspect the system to make sure everything is working properly, and no repairs are needed. As part of a real estate contract, the seller may be responsible for the cost. You, as well as the seller, will have confidence in the septic tank system.
